Groundwater Resources Development Project (GWRDP) under Groundwater Resources Development Board (GWRDB) is responsible in the investigation of Groundwater in Nepal. The investigation work is carried out by GWRDP, Babar Mahal through its 8 branch offices and with collaboration of other GWRDB's project offices. Groundwater branch offices are located at Biratnagar, Lahan, Mahottari, Birgunj, Butwal, Dang, Nepalganj and Dhangadhi. These GBOs are basically limited to terai plains and few valleys for irrigation purposes. GWRDP has done Groundwater investigation, Aquifer, Test, Water quality test and delineation of recharge area (to some extent)

From the investigation GWRDP has produced groundwater potential map for terai plains only.

The study and research program carried out by the project indicates that
     -     7,26,000 ha. of land has good potential for STWs.
     -     3,05,000 ha. of land has marginal potential for STWs & DTWs.
     -     1,90,000 ha. of land has good potential for DTWs.

Groundwater Exploration in the Terai Plain:
A major program of groundwater exploration was conducted between 1969-1974 under sponsorship of USAID with the technical assitance from USGS. Investigations were carried out in Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Banke, Bardiya, Kailali & Kanchanpur districts.

The major investigation works are:

  • In 1992, D. Duba carried out groundwater evaluation of the Terai and estimated the recharge rates zone with Canadian Co-operation.
  • In 1985, D. Tilson studied shallow groundwater potential in the Terai under UNDP assistance.
  • In 1987, GDC formulated GW development strategies for irrigation in Terai (excluding inner Terai valleys) from World Bank fund.
  • Then GWRDB expanded the deep aquifer investigation program throughout in terai from GoN & World Bank funds and this program is still continuing. Geophysical surveys also are carried out in many parts of the Terai districts.
  • Between 1987 & 1992, shallow aquifer investigations were carried out in all Terai districts including Dang, Deukhuri and Chitwan valleys with the assistance from UNDP.
  • In 1994, GDC reassessed the GW development strategies for irrigation in Terai & inner Terai valleys under World Bank finance.
  • Between 1993 & 1995, a detailed deep aquifer investigation was done in Jhapa district under the sponsorship of JICA.
